Tasmanian Table Tennis Championships 2025

Table Tennis Tasmania (TTT) extends an invitation to your school to be part of the Tasmanian Primary Schools Table Tennis Championships. This annual program is well established in the North of Tasmania, and is now being rolled out to other regions across Tasmania.

PLEASE NOTE that delivery of this program is dependent on availability of Coaches to visit each school.

This program typically kicks off in Term 2, with activities conducted at times that suit schools, teachers, and students. Coaching can start in Term 1 by special arrangement.
TTT coaches help schools prepare for the championships by offering teacher Professional Learning, and school coaching and activity sessions for students.
Qualifying matches are played at each participating school, culminating in a Girls Champion and a Boys Champion for each school.
The champions from each school then play against the champions from the other schools at the Interschools Championships Grand Finals, at which the Interschools Girls Champion, the Interschools Boys Champion, and the Interschools Mixed Doubles Champions are crowned.

WHAT TTT OFFERS SCHOOLS

School Visits: TTT Coaches visit schools up to three times per class to deliver activity sessions in preparation for the championships.
Students will learn the basics of playing table tennis, rules, etiquette, umpiring and scoring.
Teacher PL: TTT will conduct a Professional Learning session for any interested school staff, in which they provide a more detailed briefing on the competition, dive deeper into the rules, scoring and etiquette of the game, and provide interactive demonstrations of skill development and game-sense activities teachers can use in lessons.
School Championships: TTT coaches will run school championships matches to find a Girls Champion and Boys Champion for each school. The Coaches will complete all the necessary administrative work.
Matches in schools will be conducted in the Boys Singles and Girls Singles formats.
School matches can be conducted in HPE lessons, or as an opt-in activity during lunch times, after school, etc. TTT will work with schools to find a model that works for each school.
The Championships: The Girls and Boys Champions from participating schools will be invited to participate in the Tasmanian Primary Schools Table Tennis Championships, to be conducted at a yet to be confirmed Table Tennis venue, using championship-standard equipment.

The Boys and Girls Champions will represent their school in singles round robins and knockout finals at the championships, as well as mixed doubles.

To make the day even more special, TTT will provide, free of charge, each school’s Girls and Boys champion with a professionally branded Table Tennis bat to keep.

Championship winners will receive medals and their school will receive a perpetual shield to be displayed at their school for the next year.

Tasmanian Primary Schools Table Tennis Championships

Why is Table Tennis Tasmania offering this program?

TTT Coaches hold the firm belief that the more children we can get to play sport, the better. We at TTT are not expecting every participant to continue playing table tennis, but we are hopeful that as many children as possible will be exposed, through table tennis, to the joys of sport, to help them find a sporting activity they love.

Why is Table Tennis a good fit for primary school students?

Table tennis is a sport which has many upsides, such as:

It can be played in all weather, day or night, any time of the year. There are no seasons.
It can be played by people of all ages (TTT members ages range from 5 years old to 80+). The inter-generational interaction is an education in itself! Table tennis is truly a game for life.
Players don't have to be big/strong/tall/fast or have any other special physical attributes to play table tennis - everyone can play and enjoy it.
As far as sports go, table tennis is a very inexpensive sport to get started in and to play.

Will students be forced to participate?

No. We are happy to offer our services to those who want to participate, even if the numbers are relatively small. Obviously, we are hopeful that a fair number of pupils will want to participate.

Does our school have to provide all the equipment?

Ideally schools will provide the following equipment for the program:

Table tennis tables (at least 2 tables) with nets

Bats and balls can be provided by the Coach if the school does not have any.

How can we purchase table tennis equipment for our school?

Coaches can offer advice on the purchase of equipment, whether this be through a Sporting Schools grant or out of the school’s own budget, and any schools interested in purchasing equipment would be well advised to contact their local Coach or Graeme Foulis (0467 605 039 or TasSchoolsTT@gmail.com). Not only will schools get sound, unbiased advice, but they may also enjoy significant discounts due to contacts with suppliers.

How will I fit this program into my HPE and sport calendars?

This table tennis program need not interfere with other sports programs - TTT Coaches will do their best to accommodate all schools to run the program at days/times to suit you.

Who is delivering the program?

TTT coaches are all accredited with Table Tennis Australia. All hold current Working with Vulnerable Registration, and hold the DECYP Safeguarding Certificate, all of which will be produced when visiting your school.

Can we use break times for practice and games?

Absolutely, but of course this is to be decided by each school. If your school has the capacity to leave tables set up in a gym, hall or multi-purpose areas, they provide a great opportunity for students to get extra practice during the program.

Students in Grade 5/6 will learn how to safely set up, pack up and move a table as part of our schools’ program, so they can assist with this process.

As per the information provided, school championship matches can be run during break times and even after school by arrangement with TTT Coaches.

My students love table tennis, where can they go to access more participation opportunities?

Table Tennis Tasmania has nine affiliated clubs throughout Tasmania. Your visiting TTT coach will advise you on the best place to refer your students.

There is no minimum age to join a TTT-affiliated club as a member, and potential new members can visit up to three times before they are required to pay any insurance/fees. In relation to other sports, Table Tennis is very affordable, with an appropriate beginner annual membership being $35.

Families are welcome – table tennis is a sport where parents and children can play together!

I have students with a disability, can they still participate?

Yes, TTT will make every effort to accommodate all students in the Primary Schools Championships program. Please notify the visiting TTT coach about any student/s requiring adaptations so that they can prepare equipment or session modifications before their visit.

Most TTT affiliated clubs have wheelchair accessible tables, and can also provide modified balls and racquets to accommodate players with a disability.

Table tennis is a sport for all.

Which grades/age groups can participate in this program?

Grade 5 and 6 students will qualify as the Girls and Boys Champions of most schools, but the school championships qualifying can be conducted in such a way that younger participants also receive an opportunity to play. There could be some surprises!

TTT coaches, depending on their availability, may offer table tennis-related fun programs for students in lower grades too, believing this cohort is at the age and stage where they will be able to pick up and apply the basic skills of the sport.

Can schools visit a TTT affiliated club as part of the program?

Yes, although this may require some advance planning if it is for a large group. Schools visiting an affiliated TTT club can experience playing on professional-standard tables and using equipment used by the top players. This can be discussed with your local TTT coach as part of follow up discussions after your initial contact.

When will the Teacher PL be held?

Teachers are asked to contact the Event Co-ordinator about their interest in a PL session.

If there is sufficient demand, the PL session will be staged at an appropriate venue, with teachers and other school community members invited to attend.

When will the Interschools Championships be held?

The exact date for the Interschools Championships Grand Finals is yet to be confirmed, although the intention is to hold this event towards the end of Term 3 (i.e., towards the end of October). The number of schools who enter the program, school visits requested, and student interest will determine the time required to complete the run-up to the Primary Schools Championships.

It is in the program’s interest to complete all preliminary coaching activities in early Term 3.
